About the Role

We are offering students at the University of York the opportunity to apply their scientific skills to a commercial role at the cutting edge of the pharmaceutical industry. Placements typically last between 9 to 12 months in duration and you will be based in our Cambridge office.

During your placement you will be presented with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a variety of projects, from medical communications, medical affairs, health economics and evidence synthesis, all of which involve the assimilation, interpretation and creative presentation of data from clinical trials. Specific tasks could include supporting the preparation of medical education slides, performing systematic searches of medical literature, development of clinical trial manuscripts, or assimilating clinical and cost-effectiveness evidence to support Health Technology Assessment submissions to NICE.

You will typically be working on two to three projects in different disease areas at any one time and should enjoy the prospect of learning about new disease areas and treatments.

You will be working collaboratively in project teams alongside experienced colleagues and will receive one-to-one training on the technical skills required for delivering these projects successfully. You will also learn about project management and effective communication with clients.

You will usually be given the opportunity to experience work across multiple divisions. However, if you have a particular interest in any of our services please indicate this in your application. Our Scientific Placement Analysts generally work across our HTA, Market Access, Evidence Development, Publications, Medical Affairs, Rare Diseases, MedTech, Real-World Evidence and Pro Bono divisions.

The start date for the placement would be between July and October 2021 and there is a space in the application form for you to state your availability.

About You

We are looking for individuals who are collaborative, self-motivated and enthusiastic with a genuine interest in healthcare and an eagerness to learn about new areas of science.

You will be a current student at the University of York in the life sciences field and will be on track to achieve a 2.1 or above in your undergraduate studies.

Other essential requirements for the role include:

  • The ability to communicate scientific material clearly in both written and oral form – some experience in planning and writing scientific documents would be helpful
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent written English
  • Organisational skills and self-motivation
  • Fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

What We Offer

You will receive a gross salary of £20,000 per annum, plus additional benefits including company-funded social activities, discounted gym membership and extensive internal training opportunities. All placement students will undertake an extensive 2-week induction schedule that includes technical sessions on all areas of your work, as well as ensuring you are fully immersed in our culture and well acquainted with your colleagues. The deadline for applying is 23rd April 2021. We strongly recommend applying as early as possible so that we can begin processing your application.

Interviews are expected to take place in the week commencing 3rd May 2021 and will give you the opportunity to meet with members of our scientific teams. Please contact our recruitment team at if you have any questions about the role or application process.

Placement Opportunities

Whilst we currently only offer this opportunity to students at the University of York, we would encourage you to email if you attend an alternative university and are interested in this position.
